Yin-Chen Chen

Networked Sensing × Real-world Machine Learning

I am a lecturer, systems engineer, and founder working at the intersection of networked sensing and real-world machine learning. My academic background began in wireless sensor networks and data mining at National Taiwan University. Since 2015, I have designed and operated a longitudinal residential sensing platform across approximately 95 occupied homes.

My doctoral research aims to develop learning methods that remain reliable under cross-home heterogeneity, limited supervision, sensor changes, and long-term distribution shift. A central aspect of my work is to connect machine-learning methods with an explicit understanding of how real-world sensing data are generated and how they change through deployment, device replacement, maintenance, and environmental variation.

Current Research Platform

Residential Sensing Testbed

A longitudinal IoT platform deployed across approximately 95 occupied rental homes, collecting minute-level electrical and environmental measurements. The platform captures real-world heterogeneity arising from differences in building conditions, sensing configurations, occupant behavior, device replacement, missing observations, and long-term operational change.

It serves as a testbed for studying robust learning under distribution shift, limited supervision, and non-stationary data streams.

Research Questions

  1. How can models generalize across heterogeneous homes, devices, and sensing configurations?
  2. How can reliable learning be achieved when labels are sparse, delayed, or incomplete?
  3. How can sensing and learning systems detect and adapt to long-term operational, behavioral, and environmental changes?

Experience

  1. 2015 — Present

    Research Lead and System Architect, Residential Sensing Testbed

    Research initiative operated through Infowin Technology Co., Ltd.

    • Designed and operated the platform, collecting minute-level electrical and environmental measurements under real-world occupancy and maintenance conditions.
    • Built and maintained data pipelines for multimodal time-series data, including power consumption and environmental measurements.
    • Developed the platform as a testbed for studying cross-home heterogeneity, limited supervision, non-stationarity, and long-term distribution shift.
  2. 2022 — Present

    Part-time Lecturer in AI and Programming

    Chung Yuan Christian University

    • Designed and taught introductory AI, programming, and computational thinking courses for non-STEM students across 12 course sections and 545 students.
    • Maintained an average student evaluation of 4.66/5.00 since 2022.
    • Received university-level Excellent Course Design awards in 2024 and 2025.
  3. 2015 — Present

    Founder and General Manager

    Infowin Technology Co., Ltd.

    • Leads the design and deployment of production software and IoT systems across education, property management, and enterprise operations.
    • Oversees system architecture, data infrastructure, deployment, and long-term maintenance.
    • Led the Aichi International Academy smart-campus project in Nagoya, integrating campus information systems, attendance services, and IoT sensing.
    • Worked on site in Japan from 2017 to 2019.
  4. 2011 — 2014

    Software Engineer

    IBM Taiwan, Taipei

    • Developed UEFI firmware for IBM System x servers, focusing on reliability, availability, and serviceability features for mission-critical systems.
    • Diagnosed hardware–firmware interaction failures and performed root-cause analysis within a global engineering team.
